Brains Under Construction: Making Sense of the Adolescent Years - A talk with Debbie Spens

  • Fern Bothy Bruiser House, Longniddry East Lothian, EH32 0QJ United Kingdom (map)

Why do adolescents seem moody, stay up late and swing between independence and needing support? Recent neuroscience reveals how the adolescent brain is “under construction”, rewiring in ways that shape emotions, behaviour and relationships. Join me to explore what’s really going on in their heads and discover practical insights to navigate these years with more understanding and connection.

With over 30 years of experience in education and mental health, I am passionate about helping young people, families and educators navigate the challenges of growing up in today’s world. As a clinical hypnotherapist specialising in adolescent stress and anxiety, I work with young people to build resilience, confidence and emotional balance.

Through my talks, workshops and one-to-one sessions, I aim to make sense of the adolescent brain and empower families with practical tools to support their children. My approach combines deep professional knowledge with a warm, empathetic style that helps even the most anxious young people feel understood and supported.

Whether I’m speaking in schools, leading a family workshop or working individually with a young person, my goal is the same: to create a safe space where change feels possible and lasting.
